"You will never get the same consistency in exposure with an Om(anything) compared to say, a Minolta with matrix metering".

That's what my friend just told me. I don't know if that's true or not. All his pictures out of his Minolta 9, is very consistent. But I don't know if that is all that great, as far as creativity.. You've all (bigotted and biased as you all are, but then, so am I) got me all but convinced that an Om4Ti is a good buy.

Hmm.. I don't think I care that much about it being a dead system. I bought an Om1n, and it takes GREAT pics... I think if I'm doing sports or action shots, I'll need autofocus. But I'm fine with manual. Also, what I have noticed is, manual focus cameras "attract the chicks". They are more inclined to let you take a pic with one then other large "imposing" cameras.

Also, when I take a pic through my 90mm lens for portrait shots, it's stunning... I leave it at f2.5, it's still razor sharp, with great background blur, and almost everybody that I have taken a pic of, has commented how great they look from "my camera". So I'm not going to abandon my film for digital anytime soon (and even if I wanted to, I don't think $$$$ allows me to at the moment).

The spot meter is what I really want on my Om1n though... It would help greatly with the bright background, dark foreground shots when the meter is lying and I know it is. Also, I guess shadow and highlight is great too..

First, decide if you want to take film pictures. If you do, don't worry
about the "dead system" status of the OM-System. The cameras still work,
are readily available on the used market, and are readily repairable.

The difference in the OM4ti is much more than spot metering. I've had just
about all the OM cameras, and the OM-4Ti is my favorite for a versatile
shooter. True, it doesn't have the mechanical silkiness of the OM1 or Om2.
But it you really want to use the system, an OM4ti is a very good
investment. I sold my OM-4, as it didn't have the daylight flash, more
rugged top plate, drew more battery power, and was unrepairable if the
circuit failed. Function-for-function, there little difference between the
OM-4 and 4ti, save the F280 full-synchro flash.

Once you get used to the OTF multi-flash, spot metering, ability to use the
ultra-bright series-2 screens, quickly lockable AE lock, and daylight
flash...you won't go back. I've got two OM4ti's for my general use and an
OM-1n as a nostalgic trip or backup. You can get user Champagne OM-4ti's
for $350-450, black for more, up to $550.

There are LOTS of ways to go if you want to abandon the OM's. But as I
said, decide if you want to take pictures, or buy gear. The only major
thing that the OM system doesn't do well IMO are applications where you
need autofocus. It also doesn't have a state-of-the-art matrix metering
system. But the advanced spot metering system is more than adequate for
990f situations. It also doesn't have the small built-in motors of the
Contax Aria, etc.

For digital, get your feet wet with a pro-sumer digital if you want, but a
digital SLR is pretty big bucks these days, several times what an OM4ti and
a couple more lenses would cost. And the resale drops precipitously. I'm
also skeptical of the long-term reliability of the digital sensors, etc.

I'm wondering on the intelligence of investing in an Om4-Ti. It's a dead system... But I would like spot metering on my Om1n, and I'm wondering if another brand wouldn't yield me a better buy? I currently have 3 lenses... and that seems to be the leverage in investment, but for an OM4Ti, I can buy quite a bit of another brand..Or go digital SLR..

What do you all think?
Albert
