Well, that's what 'retrofocus' design does, just like an ordinary wide
angle for SLRs. The goal is increasing the distance between rear element
and the film (or CCD).

The main drawbacks are barrel distortion and bigger size. Particulary, the
front element needs an unexpected diameter on retrofocus-type wide-angle
lenses, but this may not be an issue on narrower-view retrofocus lenses.
