So, given the above history, I suspect that we are repeating
history, now with scanners. If I have followed the threads
correctly, the Polaroid 4000 uses a diffuse light source, while many
or most others use condenser (Kohler) illumination systems

I understand that Nikon goes one step further in the directional
light system with a multiple LED lighting system further increasing
contrast. However, its software adjustment for the artifacts of the
lighting system such as enhanced dust are more than adequately
handled by the ICE hardware/software system according to its users.
So there are some other things out there that are not exactly
repeating history.
