And further on the subject of stability; more weight generally equates to
more stability. Hence that "cheap heavy lens" might be more practical in
certain conditions than that more expensive "lightweight".
I have found this with binoculars where the small superlight compacts can
not be held steady in a strong breeze or gusting wind. I have seen "tests"
of binos where the writers opine that "they are on the heavy side" or the
like. Under ideal conditions maybe so; get them out on the open sea, a
mountain or just plain windy weather and that "highly acclaimed lightweight"
might be all but useless. Same principle can be applied to camera gear to a
certain degree. This too is one of the reason why target rifles and pistols
generally have heavier barrels too.
