120/220 SLRs traditionally thread the film vertically, rather than
horizontally. 4.5x6 SLRs therefore have a landscape, not portrait, format.
If the user is willing to put up with greater bulk and a higher price, the
mirror and finder can be a full 6x6 and the back can rotate, so that the
camera doesn't have to be turned around for portrait-format shots.
"Someone said that the close-focus element on lenses like the 21/2 changes
the focal length. Does it make it longer or shorter? Is it much?"
You can figure this out for yourself. If a lens doesn't move to focus, then
the focal length must get ________ to focus at closer distances.
If you're referring to an element that corrects for aberrations -- no, it
doesn't change the focal length.
With respect to the 21/2, I whipped out mine and noted that the lens moves
bodily as its focused. That is, it's a "unit focusing" lens.
