I've been very pleased with the results I've had with the Viv 2x
TeleMacro and a latest version 50/1.4. I've been meaning to try it with
the 85/2 for a 190/4. I know it won't focus to 1:1 with that lens but
should be better than 1:2.
If you like the 40cm close focus lens, you should be aware that Oly made
achromatic (2 element) versions for the IS cameras, which should be
superior to the 1 element versions marketed for the lenses for the OM
system.
The 49mm thread version is the iS/L Lens A-Macro H.Q. Converter f=40cm .
The 55mm thread version is the iS/L Lens B-Macro H.Q. Converter f=40cm.
They also made a super close-up, 3 element, 49mm thread iS/L Lens A-Life
Size Macro H.Q. Converter f=13cm.
The 49mm f=40cm versions, at least, is discontinued, but does show up on
*Bay, although probably no more often than the Kiron 105/2.8
Maybe the real question is what do you want, in terms of capabilities
and/or performance, that your current equipment doesn't provide?

The 50/3.5 is a great lens. Whether it is the 'right' lens depends on
what you plan to use it for.
For bugs, flowers, etc. outdors, I don't like the 50/3.5........

Actually what I want it for is for bugs, flowers, and things outdoors. So I
appreciate your info here. Presently for macro work I have the vivitiar 2x
macro which I put behind the 50/1.8, I have the Oly 40cm close up lens which
screws on the front of the 50/1.8, and I have a set of vivitar extension
tubes. I find the extension tubes awkward to use. I like the screw on lens,
gives excellent results, but is limited to larger things. The vivitar 2x
macro does go to 1:1, which I have been concerned about with the 50/3.5 only
going to 1:2. Maybe the 50/3.5 is not a lot better than what I have for what
I want to do with it.
I know everyone loves the 90mm Zuiko, but the price, ouch!
I would like to have a true macro lens though, as I do quite a lot of it and
really enjoy it. The Kiron sounds like a good alternative, but they are a
rare beast on epay. I don't mind if its heavy as I usually do macro stuff
purposely, so go prepared with tripod, etc.
I've also considered the Vivitar macro lenses, but have been a little
nervous of quality, since you have to screw on an addition to get to 1:1.
