Well, I'm getting a bit late into this thread, but I have been busy digging
tons of earth in the garden, and scanning photographs from the holiday...

Scottish conditions are wet, cold and windy. And that's just the summer
(what summer...?).

Silk underwear is the way to go. Its advantages are too legion to list.
However, I don't own any yet. Currently I am using a thin fleece pullover
shirt (a discontinued Rohan item) which I have had for a number of years.
Wool next to my skin irritates me intensely, so the fleece is a boon. It is
warm in the cold, wicks moisture away and the breeze goes right through it,
cooling me down when I need it. Modern microfleeces are PDB (pure dead
brilliant).

Down below, I have almost abandoned thermal bottoms for either microfleece
lined windproof trousers or a pair of (also discontinued) Rohan Molers,
imitation moleskins that do not have the disadvantages of moleskin when wet.
I like very soft and fine undies down there, you can chafe pretty badly in
Scottish conditions.

A useful alternative for really cold conditions is cycling tights,
preferably without footloops (tuck 'em up the back somewhere...), either
Roubaix material or just plain Lycra. Warm even when wet.

Main problem is (OM content) condensation on that OM that is round your neck
inside your shell layer...

Donald.

P.S. - you should also consider smell; depending on how often you change
gear during a trip, cotton can be very nasty, as can Hellys. Silk, on the
other hand...
