I think this depends on the company. In my stint in product
marketing, someone always asked me about products before the
official release. Usually the source of the leak was a sales
person, but other groups leaked information as well. I can
assure you, no one ever lost their job or were even reprimanded
over the issue. Indeed, one sales slime even tried to write
the press report for my product and release it without my
knowledge. Since he sold lots of products, no one ever spoke
to him concerning the issue.
