"will there be enough light to get away with f8 on 50 speed film w/o dipping
so low into shutter that the breeze becomes a problem?"
.... Ah, good question. And for outdoor shooting, one that can only be
resolved on site - on the day.
One generality about weather... Early in the morning (lesser extent as the
day wears on towards noon) is usually more likely to be calm, as opposed to
afternoons and evenings. This is true in many geographical locations - but
of course in no way assured.
I would scout out an indoor target (museum etc) in the area beforehand in
case the weather turns out bad for you. Then find out what time they open
and aim to get there half an hour early so you can be setting up your
outdoor shots as early as possible. (I happen to like the light quality in
the morning when the sun is still not right up high). If the weather is
sunny and not too windy you can shoot at Kew - if not, head for the
secondary (indoor) target.
Using a light tripod can be aided with some kind of weighting if there is a
slight wind. It could be a light jacket zipped or buttoned up to the neck
with whatever heavy items you can fill it (pockets and sleeves) with.. roll
the body up and tie the sleeves together at the cuffs. Then drape this
weighted ragged "loop" over/around the tripod legs with the "collar" neck
topside. This takes some experimentation, but any similar improvised
weighting might make the setup more stable and dampen any movement.
By the way; another point to bear in mind.... London - especially south east
London - is Crime Capital U.K. I would keep valuables in a plastic shopping
bag (camera bag can go in one of these with a short chain or the like and
gripped with your hand) - and carry a "nice" dummy bag (cheap leather
shoulder bag or the like) filled with "junk" (sandwiches, water/sodas etc)
carried convincingly over your shoulder. Keep large bills under one of your
feet - and or credit cards, passport etc in an inside-the-waist (or
inside-the-shirt) pouch. Keep a cheap dummy wallet in your back hip pocket
with some collected local business cards, paper, a few coins and low
denomination bills. You could even buy a junk camera (a compact - it doesn't
have to even work)locally and hang it around your neck. If you get mugged -
they might get the shoulder bag + junk camera. They might even demand your
"wallet". Let 'em have all of 'em. And don't forget to replace them if that
happens ;)
Cheers

But Kew Gardens and Fuji Velvia 50 (OR Konica Impresa 50) sound like a great
combination. Just use a light tripod - mirror lock and timer - and bracket a
half stop each way if in doubt.
