Pete,
I thought like you about 10 years ago and bought a spare screen. I've
never had to use it. I've since acquired another screen, just in case.
Some of my cameras are real beaters: I once had a strap break and an OM1
drop about 10m (and roll 20m afterwards) when climbing. The skylight
filter on the mounted 50/1.8 was scratched, but everything else
survived. Including the focusing screen :)
