normally made, if not mold?

Pictures I saw in old Leica Fotografie magazines showed it to be a
complicated process. Main thing is to mold a batch of glass with the
right optical properties with no internal flow lines. Then they were
sawn to rough shape, ground and then polished. I remember one
picture of a saw slicing off the end of a large glass rod sort of
like making refrigerator cookies. The Japanese may have completely
revolutionized the manufacturing process as they have everything else.
