The 410 and 405 are made with the same premise. Both have the ability to quickly disengage and re-engage the gearing. Neither head is 'fast' so I guess it isn't very much at all like a ballhead. Both however offer the precision controls of a geared head with many of the same abilities of a pan tilt head. If composition and macro work is something you do the 405/410 are superior to almost anything else. Mark Lloyd --- "Daniel J.
