I think that would be better. Mirror lenses lose almost a stop of light
from the central 2nd mirror, so that f/8 becomes an f/11, slower than a
300/9. They also tend not to be as good as refractors.

The astronomical lenses test well: Questar, Celestron, Honeywell.

You just missed the Tamron 300/2.8 with 1.4 and 2x converters on ebay at a
reasonable price.
