There are several methods . . . Rand mentioned one of them. Debatable with
many opinions about what works best, just as using a cable release or
pushing down on the camera and using the fingertip on the shutter release
button.
Personally, my most effective one has been setting a version of the old
"box snare" using a spare ever-ready case with the bottom part baited with
a body cap. The nose piece is propped up and sprung with bungee cords so
that as the body enters to retrieve the body cap, the nose piece snaps shut
entrapping the body in the ever-ready case. One of the old black leather
cases with the tripod screw works best as it has a 1/4-20 socket in the
bottom that can be bolted down. It keeps a particularly robust body from
dragging the case off a distance into the brush and minimizes the thrashing
about once the body is trapped.
Open the case carefully after one has been snared.
