I think the current last word in aluminum cylinders is a plating of
Nickle silicon-carbide called Nikasil. This provides the wear
resistance necessary without the complications of a steel liner in an
aluminum block. It apparently provides good service and the plating can
be renewed at overhaul. There are other, similar platings available.
Without a liner or the special plating aluminum is just too soft and
wears too easily to provide long service.

To further stir up the nomenclature mavens, it is frequently referred
to as ni-si or nickel silicide. It is used in Audi V8s and Porsche
sixes.
