GM made a small aluminum V8 for one of the new "compact" Buicks in '62 or '63.
I don't think it worked out too well. Then in about '77 they started using
aluminum on the 305/350, although I think they began with just the heads and
intake manifolds. Rolls-Royce used an aluminum 412 CID engine (and a General
Motors transmission).
OM content: My old black OM-1 has what *looks* like aluminum top/bottom plates.
I can tell because of the brassing--er, I mean, "aluminizing".
