I've had time now to look at least once at all the entries and make
comments on a few. It's a wonderful group of pictures and I intend to
spend more time looking and commenting.
I have no wish to revive any "What is and isn't a Landscape" stuff. Nor
do I wish to imply that any picture on the TOPE is or isn't a landscape
or does or doesn't belong there. I think they all belong there.
What struck me strongly looking at so many pictures in a row with some
care, is how many of them convey a powerful "Sense of Place". Even when
I don't know where the picture was taken, most of them remind me
strongly of a similar place where I have been and bring a whole sense of
being there, on the land, along with other sensory and emotive affects.
Others don't remind me of a specific place, but still give me the sense
of 'being there'. I suggest that a good, non-exclusive definition of a
'Landscape' could be any picture that gives the viewer a strong sense of
being somewhere (known or not) on the Earth looking at the view.
I look back and see my words don't quite do justice to what I want to
convey. Perhaps "Sense of Place" is the best I can do.
