If I were going to make any installation or modifications to a vehicle for
camera storage etc I would carfully consider them first. I have noticed the
floor of mine in certain areas very hot - even in cool weather - due to heat
passing under the vehicle floor from the motor and transmission etc. I think
perhaps an insulated box - insulated from the floor as well - is a good
idea. A cooling fan ducting air from the shaded area under the car when
parked would work as long as it is ducted well away from the heat sources
and flooring I mentioned warming up. Another alternative is a box with the
thick foam liners for shipping various items that wind up in the trash. The
lining can be increased in thickness, and an insulated lunch type bag used
as an inner container. Such a thing covered with a blanket on the floor
behind the seats etc won't attract prying eyes, and the temperature level
inside will not likely get very high at all. If a large ziplock is included
and a good silica gel can, the camera can remain there for long periods
without fear of any serious deterioration.
Cheers,
Lee

How advisable is it to keep an Oly in a blazingly hot car trunk? What film
will tolerate this abuse? Any thoughts?
Personally, I drive a van with a cooler in the back, and I can
carry a camera loaded with HIE all summer without excessive heat
exposure.
Something I did on a previous car, and intend eventually to do on
my current van, is install a small ventilation blower in the
floor, to exchange hot interior air for the cooler air in the
shade beneath the van while parked. My previous van had a roof
vent instead, but in the Pacific Northwet, vents that face up
always become roof drains. I expect a vent system in the floor
of the trunk would work well on a car, too.
