Winsor,
I bought an Hakuba (Velbon) 4-section leg CF tripod ver a year ago. More
reasonably priced than the rest and it has held up well - even to use in
gypsum sands. The tripod is quite rigid - despite the many leg joints, even
with the center column up. I am very satisfied. I chose the 4 section
model because it packs better.

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on the relative quality
and rigidity of various carbon fiber tripods? Manfrotto v. Gitzo v.
Velbon/Hakuba
