Sure, it would work provided you have enough extension to prevent the mirror
from hitting the rear of the lens. The catch is that you would have a fixed
magnification. The focusing helicoid doesn't do much except allow for fine
focusing. Any time you wanted to change your magnification ratio and/or
distance-to-subject, you would have to change your amount of extension by
adding/subtracting tubes.
