I'm about to take the plunge later in the day and buy a new Dell computer to
use with the film scanner I bought in the scanner frenzy of 2001. All of
this being done so I can scan and print my Zuiko/Olympus produced images.
The question is which way to go. Flat panel or CRT. Opinions please. Bill

You can get a CRT with superb color, even illumination, individually
adjustable color guns for color calibration, variable resolution that
does not look funny for less than half the cost of an LCD. Or for
the price of a 17" LCD you can get a pro level 21" CRT. Does take up
a lot of room though.
If you buy a LCD, examine it closely. A simple test is to scroll a
large picture on the screen and observe whether the brightness and
contrast change as the part of the picture at the top moves to the
bottom. Tilt it to see if there are changes in the appearance. It is
a big deal to get the display image close to what prints. If the
display is touchy, it is a pain in the a---.
I don't know whether your Dell is like a Mac, but if it is you could
use a smaller LCD for everyday use and also plug in a CRT for
critical PhotoShop use. Then you could drag all your Photoshop
palettes and controls onto the LCD and reserve the CRT just for the
image you are working for. It is a convenient way to work because
PhotoShop remembers where things are supposed to be. So for about the
price of a 17" LCD you could have a 15" LCD plus a 17" CRT which is
pretty roomy if it reserved just for the workspace.
