For practical purposes, Photoshop LE (now Photoshop Elements) is the SAME
software as full Photoshop. The primary piece that's missing is the ability
to handle CMYK operations (disclaimer: there may also be other things
missing, some of which some people may find essential). Assuming you're not
sending your output to a service bureau or magazine for offset printing,
this is an ability you're not likely to miss.

Adobe has been offering a rebate for Elements for registered owners
of LE. I think it is $35.
The other part that is missing from it compared to a full Photoshop
that I have hesitated over is the ability to make shadow masks which
I found useful with my old limited dynamic range scanner.
It does have some neat new filters though.
Another alternative is to buy someone's non pirated copy of a
previous version of the full Photoshop. You can sometimes get a very
good buy and if you are a hobbyist(i.e., not color matching output
for a print service) version 4 is not all that different from version
6.
