Olympus did make two versions of this rubber hood. One was marked as being
for the 40/2, 85/2 and 100/2.8 (an older version) and the other was marked
only as being for the 85/2 and the 100/2.8 (the newer, current version).
About a year ago I had one of each type as part of an evilbay lot I
purchased.
I measured both, wondering if there were differences. There *are* slight
differences between the two. One is slightly narrower and deeper than the
other. I didn't keep notes, but from what I remember and what you describe,
it sounds like the newer version is the slightly deeper version and that's
probably what's causing the difficulty.

Subject: [OM] 100mm/2.8 lens hood
<snip>
To my surprise, the newly acquired case won't close with the lens
shade fitted in the lid - the outside diameter of the shade is
larger than the inside diameter of the lens case.
The new hood is rubber, and marked both 2/85mm and 2.8/100mm.
What gives? Did Olympus make two different lens shades for this lens,
and only the old one fits in the case? Do cases shrink over time?
Am I imagining this problem? Some of the above?
