I also collect fountain pens and there are huge numbers of fountain pen
collectors who buy MIB Limited Edition pens and keep them in the vault. I'm
positive that every obsession has this "dark side".
But John's right, the Leica nuts are WAY out of control. They trade
shrink-wrapped boxes back and forth, many of them selling for >$10,000. In
fact, I KNOW that many of these items are X-Rayed prior to money changing
hands to ensure that the item is-in-fact intact and the shrink wrap hasn't
been replaced!

This is the list where we obsess over "How can I be sure what S/N of the
____ mm lens did they swich to multicoating?" And the 7, 8, 14, and 21mm
deep rear lenscap discussion.....BTW- whomever was asking about deep
lenscaps, I have a Tamron AdaptAll 2 rear cap that measures something like
21mm. This has gotta be the deepest one, no?

This list pales (and that's an understatement) compared to the "glass-case
collectors" in the LUG (Leica User's Group) who would faint if you so much
as picked up a shrink-wrapped, with plastic wrap to protect that, NEW
"in-the-box" M6 without first donning pure cotton lint-free gloves.
