Yes, an acquaintance I ran into at the 2001 Fontana NASCAR race was
assisting an SI photographer and they were shooting film. Even at the
weekly level there is still enough time to get E-6 processed, slides
edited, scans made, pre-press work performed, etc. At the daily or web
site publication level? Forget it, digital all the way now.

At NASCAR events I worked in 2001 I would estimate about 50% (maybe even
a little more) were shooting digital. This up significantly from 2000.
In other forms of motorsports the film to digital ratio is lower still,
perhaps 1/3 digital at most. However, the equipment I see, film or
digital, all looks pretty much the same--big wunderbrick bodies, huge
lenses, etc. Point and blast--the fastest AF and MD wins <g>.

You can always recognize me at the track, look for one of the few still
using OMs, usually shooting one shot at a time ;-) (Now I also have this
funny little digital almost-wunderbrick that I adore called an E-10, but
with the lack of buffer space, it too is pretty much a one shot at a
time camera.) "Discontinued" OM gear will work fine for me as long as I
am shooting 35mm film.
