The OM1N, though, is a lot less happy. The meter is alive, but unless I
point it at darkness, the needle is way off into the + section. Even setting
the film to 25 and the shutter speed to 1/1000, it's still at +; if I put my
hand in front of the lens, the needle moves, but..
My first thought was that it might be the wrong sort of battery; they say
"PX 625A Alkaline" on them, which suggests they're not the old mercury ones
-- but the weird thing is that the OM1MD seems to be working fine. Should I
expect the metering to be _this_ far off because of the wrong battery? Is
there some other more obvious thing I'm doing wrong here?
I think John or Clint just mentioned that with the wrong
battery, the meter is off at least 3 stops. Maybe the -MD has been
recalibrated to take the new battery, and the other has not been so
modified. I think some one mentioned a sticker that gets placed in
the film chamber to indicate the recalibration was done.

Wrong battery. Really you should download the OM FAQ and read it.
There has been lots of discussion in the past about these alkaline
cells putting out too much voltage, enough so that some have claimed
that they burned out the OM meter system. The Zinc Air batteries
will work, but their voltage is not very constant. The best solution
is to have John convert it for silver batteries, or to buy one of
those little adaptors for the silver battery.
