You are probably over-exposing due to the velvet,
which may be more than 3 stops darker than 18 0ray.
Also are you shooting C41? Try looking at the
negatives to see if the jewelry is very, very dense.
If you throw in the next variable of the automatic
print machines on top of the TTL being tricked by a
dark background, who knows what results you will get.
Try using a grey card or gray velvet to begin with,
use manual exposure on the flash set up, bracket, take
notes, and use slide film.
