There's another possibility. It's happened to me several times in (I
think the second half of) the 80's, always with Kodak films. What
happened was that somewhere in the middle of a roll the camera would
stop winding the film. I did not notice until the counter was past
frame 38 - 39- 40.... you get the picture. After rewinding the film
and having it processed I found that it had worked ok up to a certain
position where on a few cm of the film strip the perforation was
missing. Not stripped or torn, simply lacking the holes in the film
material. Caused me to lose quite a few great, unrepeatable shots.
After this had happened to me a few times I never used Kodak again
until very recently, and it's still only with extreme reluctance when
I do so now, once in a while.
