I have (had) an ALPS MD-1300, which was, a few years ago, the best photo
printer available. Dye sub. Stunning prints to 81/2x11.
Not better than a good Epson inkjet. I'd love to see a comparison of the
P-400 with the latest Epson, as I would bet it would require a loupe to see
any differences.
The ALPS KILLED me with consumables.

Not only the paper is more expensive, the CMY film is the major cost, you
have to purchase in set. I bought a Fagor Primera printer in 95' at
US$1000.
The paper and CMY film cost over US$3.5 per page, due to this I printed
very
little, the printer was just throw away few months ago. It is a problem of
following too close to the digital world.
