Talk to the lab before you expose! The choice of developer and technique
is a factor in optimizing exposure. Generally, of course, if you push the film
(raise the ASA) the contrast goes up and the reverse for pulling.
I use ASA 320 for normal contrast with TMAX 400 (TMY film) developed in Xtol.
For most developers, you probably want more like 200-250 -- assuming
standard calibration of your equipment, etc.
For outdoor portraits, I like TMY pulled to 200 for low contrast faces. When
I need speed, I regularly push TMY to 800 and the contrast is very managable.
With Xtol 1:1 developer, I find 1600 to be pretty much the marginal limit for
contrast in normal lighting conditions unless I want special effects.
Consider TMZ (Tmax 3200) if you want various film speeds with less drastic
changes in contrast. Obviously more grain...
