Take the straps away from the nuts that use them?
Sorry, couldn't help myself.
The Domke straps have leather pads on them to keep the rings from brassing
the body next to the lugs. Aside from that I keep the strap length
adjusting clips well above the body to keep them from rubbing. Eventually
the strap itself will eventually rub through a black body
finish. Solution? I keep a never-ready case bottom on the body unless I'm
changing film, using the winder or otherwise using the tripod screw
socket. With the OM's, the snaps are on a leather tab that goes around the
lug. That and the case bottom and protects the body corner.
If I'm working mostly from a tripod, or if the camera is mounted in a flash
bracket (a Newton or BG-2) I usually remove the strap entirely to get it
out of the way and keep it from dangling in front of the lens (which can
happen). All my straps are now aftermarket and have quick releases about
3-4 inches from the lug attachment. The original Olympus ones are too
narrow and dig into my neck and don't have QR's. The wider Domke and
Tamrac straps, especially the padded Tamrac are much easier on my neck.
