Theoretically the only part of the camera that touches the base (shiny) side of
the film should be the pressure plate, so start there. Try cleaning with
solvent (acetone, alcohol, etc.) being careful not to touch anything else inside
the back (plastic parts can be damaged, but the pressure plate is metal and
won't be harmed). Wipe so you leave no marks. Then you can check by loading a
fresh roll of out-of-date film, winding off a few shots, then rewind leaving the
leader out. Then pull out the film and check the base (and the emulsion, for
that matter) for scratches -- you can see them without processing.
