It sounds like the lens' problems are reflected in the price. I'm assuming
it was <$2-300. Could you share the price? (Inquiring minds want to know
so that we can express the appropriate amount of envy.)
If it were my lens, I'd shoot some pictures with slide film at various
distances and evaluate the images for focus and aperture correctness. At
the same time, get an estimate on a CLA and adjust. Then, based on the
results of the images, decide if you need to get it fixed or you can live
with the peculiarities.

I had the chance to get a 18/3.5 at a very very low price.
It arrived yesterday. It is in nice condition - usual paint wear on the
diaphragm, the back looks "used", but the glass is without sign.
But... when focusing, the lens does not change its size (all other lenses
do). Visually, mounted on a camera, I am able to focus, but the infinity is
at about the 3m mark on the lens.
I suspect some problem whith the focusing mechanism, but it is simple to
correct or not?
