They don't. They *force* you to *activate* it, which requires zero personal
information (just the exchange of a hashed checksum value calculated from
several pieces of hardware in your system). You can nevertheless refuse to
register the O/S, and no personal info goes to Microsoft.

P.S.: I don't know if it's more backwards-compatible, but it sure worked well
for a bunch of stuff that Win98SE puked on.
