Red eye reduction has the effect of delaying the point at which the shutter
fires. Even adults can change expressions rapidly when the pre-flash fires
or blinks at them and then is followed by the "real" flash a few moments
later. I have turned that feature off in our little point & shoot Olympus
for that reason.
