Biggest reason to use one is to keep unwanted stray light out of the
viewfinder... remember, the cells are up in the finder on -1s and -2s, so if
your shooting (manual on the -2), it takes the reading as you see it in the
finder and fires. Stray light entering from the eyepiece end can goof you
up for sure.
If the Eyecup 1 bothers you, then try an Eyecup 2. Some prefer the "1"
because of the bigger cup, but I use a "2" on the OM-1n and OM-2s with
diopters in them and they work almost as well. Regardless of which you
prefer for blocking stray light, using a "2" is better than using none. A
dioptric correction lens in either cup will keep your eye farther away from
the viewfinder, but not nearly as far as glasses will.
