Starting out I found it helpful to get a good book that would give a 
basic understanding. The current large paper bound books by John 
Hedgcoe are pretty informative and are aimed at new photographer. 
Try your local good bookstore and thumb through them.  You will be 
amazed at what you will learn.
Take lots of pictures and take a notebook so you know what you did 
when you get them back from the processor.
