This sad experience definitely calls for a device like a "comet-trap", i.e. a
system that would detect a bright source of light in a limited part of the sky
and release the shutter. Don't you think this already exists? Could one think
of a detector coupled to the viewfinder, constantly metering the amount of
light coming through the lens, and flipping a switch when the image suddenly
gets brighter? This of course only will function will a very dark sky and very
bright comets passing the field of view.
Just a creative thought-
