Chuck's family was easy to photograph, except for the grandkids! Best
results were before banquet, small group portraits. I used an umbrella
bounced T-32 at 35 degrees and 7 feet high for the main light and a
camera mounted T-45 using a LumiQuest Ultrasoft to bounce and soften the
fill light. There was a heavy dark brown curtain behind the subjects,
so the late model Noritsu processor (printing digitally on conventional
photo paper)/Kodak Porta 160 NC film combo was able to give very fine
skin tones. An OM-4T with a 50mm f/1.4 MC at f/8 gave positive focusing
and sharp images in what I knew would be dim ambient light. An OM-2S
with 35-70mm f/3.6 was also on hand for wide angle (lots of people) or
short telephoto needs (head and shoulder shots). A 35-105 would have
been too hard to focus. A 24mm f/2.8 handled a hastly assembled group
shot, but a warning to all: don't put a kid clowning around in the
center of view!
Much less successful was a setup with black no-seam paper backdrop and a
T-32 without an umbrella. I was using a 90mm f/2 and most sittings came
out harsh, with the black background fooling the Noritsu into printing
the subjects too light.
Nice, personable group, with a good time had by all. I even filled
Chuck in with the OM List happens over a lunch.
