Before you joined this list we had a rather lengthy discussion as to what
should be allowed/disallowed. Tom had taken some rather nasty barbs from
new or non-contributing members about his occasional postings of FS
items. He stopped posting and took the items to dBay. After MUCH
encouragement on and off the list by many, many members, he generously
began to include us in his sales again (I don't know that I would have,
after the comments that had been made).
Tom is an important part of our list and has certainly passed his
initiation into the list membership. He also performs an important
function of ferreting OM systems and redistributing them to us. Most of us
do not have the time or inclination to do the work he does in securing
these large purchases. He grades the equipment, and sells it for under the
going rate to members. What is there to grouse about?
I just wish he had found another F280. <g>

If B&H and KEH and other groups were active on a list advertising their
equipment constantly it would get very disagreeable to many on that list.
Many wouldn't even raise their concerns about it. People don't like
confrontation on public lists in general. I think your interventional
question in this thread is of dubious merit but I will attempt to answer
your question with general and specific points.
In our day to day existence commercials and advertising may be the norm
but I would find it irritating for an individual or group on a public
mailing list to be *constantly* advertising their equipment for sale. I
mean many list members including myself have web pages that include items
they dont require and are for sale. However in my experience those
individuals don't use it as a shopfront for a business. Moreover they
don't indirectly advertise their equipment with 'replies' to questions by
new (and sometimes old; as in time on list not in the sense they take
Viagra) list members.
