If you're not lugging the tripod far on foot there's not a lot sense to pay
the extra charge. Carbon Fiber's a compromise. Yes, it's rigid and will
take a beating, but with less weight the tripod will not be as steady as it
would be with its aluminum counterpart. They put weight hooks on center
columns for a reason. An Olympus user is compromised more still due the
lighter weight of his gear as opposed to other SLR systems out there.
That's something else for our crowd to consider.
I think the carbon fibers are good solutions for some people with some
needs, less so for others. But if you need carbon fiber, the best made is
by Gitzo. Argument on that point's a joke. For that, we might just as well
toss our kits away, wander sheepishly over to Nikon's side of the hobby and
tell those nice folk, "We're sorry, we made a terrible mistake, you were
right all along. May we please come in?" <g>

I do have a Gitzo, but I don't know what model.
Lots of weird numbers and even more funny model
names. That's the deal with Gitzo : you never
know what the hell they're talking about when
they mention the name of a tripod :-)
I remember not wanting to spend the extra money
on the carbon fiber 'pod, and I remember
regretting it ever after.
