I have updated my web page to show comparisons among the 35/2.8,
35-70/3.5-4.5, 35-80/2.8, and 35-105/3.5-4.5 at 35 mm, 40 mm, and 45 mm
focal lengths:

I shot the scene at 4-5 meters this time at f8. The photos are quite a bit
smaller than before so that I could put them nearer to each other (for
comparison purposes). I hope they are not too small to be meaningful. I can
alter this if people find it frustrating.
I found the 35/2.8 shift to show some barrel distortion, as Gary Reese
indicated in his lens tests. Of the three zooms, the 35-70/3.5-4.5 seems to
show a little bit worse barrel distortion than the other two zooms, which is
slightly different from Gary's report, though the three zooms are very
comparable.
The 35-80/2.8 is slightly wider at 35mm than the 35/2.8 shift. When the
35-80/2.8 is adjusted to match the focal length of the 35/2.8 shift, the
comparison between the two lenses improves. I have posted a scenic
comparing the two lenses with the 35-80/2.8 matched to the 35/2.8 shift
focal length.
The last time I posted my slides on the 35-80/2.8 at 35, 40, and 45mm, I did
so without comment. I'd like to say that the 35-80/2.8 is a gorgeous,
sharp, contrasty, drop-to-the-knees-and-praise-God beautiful piece of glass.
Any interpretation of these results as some sort of negation of that is very
unfortunate.
