Dear List,
I have succumbed to the purchase of a very beautiful mint OM-2 SP camera
body today. I checked it out as best as I could in the shop but I didn't
have tweezers to have a look at the focusing screen although all
indications with the camera were that it had seen a few rolls of film
followed by extended storage. It has the Green LED for the flash indicator
so it is the battery hungry version. It has no brassing at all and all the
covers are present.
Problem (maybe): I got it home and started checking it out thoroughly. The
functions all seem to work correctly. I removed the focussing screen and
installed my 2-4 screen. Looked through the viewfinder.... FUNGUS!! a spot
of it at the edges of the viewfinder. I took out the screen and looked
inside. The pentaprism lower surface had two spots of fungus that came off
easily with a cotton tip. Reinstalled the screen and the fungus was gone.
Now, I removed the screen again and looked through the viewfinder. I saw
some blurred images of fungal spots that it was impossible to focus on
clearly with my eye. There were several of them all out of focus. I checked
the mirror and there was no marks or fungus. So I re-installed the screen
and tried looking for the fungus and couldn't see any.
My guess is that they are on the surfaces of the pentaprism not available
to routine cleaning by the user. It doesn't interfere with viewing the
image at all with the focus screen installed. The viewfinder is otherwise
ok and I can't see any desilvering although I don't really know what to
look for with this.
My question: What should I do? The camera is otherwise absolutely perfect.
Should I have the camera cleaned for this alone. How difficult is the
cleaning? I got it for a reasonable price. I have never seen this problem
before and would appreciate any advice on what I should do.
Thanks
Dr. Oben O. Candemir MBBS Syd Uni.
