I've tried a few brands myself. All of these are Nimh AA cells:
Panasonic - funny construction won't work in some devices
Olympus - long life, well built. Natch.
Sanyo 'green' (no labels) - best life yet. Supposed to be 1750 mAh.
MAHA - large cell to cell variability in capacity, not a good thing
Nexcell - good quality, consistent capacity
RayOVac Ultra - consistent 1600 mAh, $10.97 for four at WalMart
I bought my Sanyo greens from:

They definitely seem to last longer than any others I've had experience
with.
