I would say it is two things:
1) I usually apply a small amount of 'unsharp mask' (Don't ask me why
unsharp means sharpen). That really makes the details jump out.
2) I'm using a Polaroid Sprintscan 4000. The difference between 2700dpi and
4000dpi is most obvious in details like this. Unsharp helps, but can't
overcome sheer number of pixels. I may not have the math perfect, but I
believe that 2700dpi results in an image of 3720x2500 ~= 9.5megapixel.
4000dpi is about 5500x3700 ~= 20megapixels.
Don't get me wrong, the Acer is a great scanner -- incredible bang for the
buck. You just can't overcome pixel count.
