It depends on the graphic but you're right, I've seen it happen. I have one
program (graphic converter, on the Mac) which also offers an option of LZW
with prediction. That seems to give me a smaller file size in any situation
(even those that were compressed with plain LZW seem to get smaller, and the
ones that used to be actually bigger do actually see some compression as
well). It is a bit slower but I've never had a problem with opening these
files in any graphics program.
