Dear Andrew.
I have tried your suggestion of pulling the SM card in and our several
times. I purchased a USB card reader which is connected to my PC. I was able
to read the title of SM card folder but unable to access the jpg files. The
new card was formatted and that from the camera.
Yet both don't seem to be able to be read by the camera.
Olympus distributors in Sydney discourage any cleaning of cmaera contacts.
I am well a truly baffled!
Michael

The only part I disagree with is that the contacts on the cards are
gold-plated. Gold does not corrode, and too much cleaning could wear it
off.
It sounds as if you do not take the SM cards out of your camera too often.
I read mine by slapping them into an adaptor that plugs into one of my
laptop's slots. You may be able to safely make the connection work well by
ejecting then re-inserting the cards into your camera.
That said, I did have a case where a particular card appears to have gone
dead for a while, but it was only an 8Mb card, so pretty useless except at
lousy-resolution mode. I held onto it anyway, and tried it again recently.
It wanted a formatting, but seems to be OK.
