Hmmm. Maybe someday, under "Zuikoholic Syndrome" in the American Psychiatric
Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV, there
will be a photo of Tom. A new category of mental illness? Somewhere between
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Intermittent Explosive Disorder?
Symtoms:
Overwhelming preoccupation with, and desire to repetitively purchase anything
Olympus (specifically items from the OM system), despite resulting financial
chaos and loss of social and emotional bonds.
Total social and emotional withdrawal, unless interaction is related to
Olympus cameras, accessories, and their use, or patient is collaborating with
others likewise afflicted.
This disturbance causes clinically significant impairment in social,
occupational, or other areas of important functioning.
No clinically proven treatment methodologies for Zuikoholic Syndrome exist at
the present time. Prognosis is predictably poor. Alternate treatment
regimens of ritalin and rum seem to suppress symptoms somewhat, allowing
patient to function marginally for brief periods of time. Disorder is
inevitably terminal, however, following a short period of dementia.
Etc.
