I?ve got one, bought it used, but in like-new condition, for $400 from B&H
back in the mid ?80s. That?s probably the equivalent of $1000 today. I
don?t use it a whole lot, but have had success with it mounted on a Lepp
shoulder pod shooting wildlife and auto and motorcycle races. I?ve also
used it tripod-mounted with the 2X-A teleconverter with surprisingly good
results. The two-stop light loss makes it an 800mm f/12, which is as close
to the 1000mm f/11 as I?m going to get. One minor advantage is that it
accepts 72mm filters, just like the 180/2.8 and the 300/4.5, both of which
I use a lot more.
