Mike,
The 85-250 is a nice lens, but it has a tripod mount for a reason. It is
quite large. It is also a two-touch, if that matters to you. The results
are quite good.
The biggest reason I don't own one is that the prices on this lens have
taken a freefall in the last year. The most I have ever paid for one is
$315 and, unfortunately, I have sold pristine ones for as little as $225.
As a buyer, that's great, as a seller, it is not.
I suspect you might get more use out of the 85-250 than the 300/4.5, but if
you need the extra 50mm, the 300/4.5 is a simply excellent lens. For its
focal length, it is pretty small (big, but small, if that makes sense). I
think you would like it too.
